TRADITIONAL TERRITORY
OF THE P'UREPECHA MESETA

From Zihuatanejo
Available Year Round

TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE

P'UREPECHA MESETA

In the rural heart of the most traditional of all P'urepecha territories, lies an expanse of rustic and agricultural splendour, with old winding roads connecting a plethora of art villages, each with their own unique medium.  Less frequented by foreign or local tourists, this area is more often a treasure-hunt for gallery owners and serious art collectors who swoon at the traditional textiles, whimsical sculptures, road-side food stands, pine forests, beguiling fields, painted church ceilings, indigenous resistance and a feeling that one has stepped into the past, passing through villages where it's common to see locals in authentic attire.

If you are longing for an inspiring journey that is crusted in volcanic soil and served with a side of tradition, you've come to the right place.

LEAVING THE TOURIST ZONE

Hotel Location:  Angahuan, Michoacan

Best Day to Start:  Monday

Depart Zihuatanejo on the 6 AM bus to Uruapan, arriving at approximately 10 AM.  A mystical series of cobblestone paths winding through lush sub-tropical forests that line the Cupatitzio River, our first stop has inspiring water features and gorgeous stone bridges to remind you of fantasy landscapes.

From Uruapan, we will visit Angahuan.  Here we will enjoy a traditional meal among the best weavers of this area.  Purchase rebozos and gabons (ponchos) made from cotton and wool, witness weaving on a back-strap loom, and enjoy having the rare opportunity to be hosted by a local family.

Retreat to our rustic cabin in Angahuan.

BORN BEFORE THE EYES OF MAN

Hotel Location:  Angahuan, Michoacan

Day Two

Being in Angahuan means having the opportunity to beat the heat of day for our trek to Paricutin Volcano and the church ruins of San Juan Parangaricutiro.

Please be warned - this is not for the faint of heart.  Though there is no risk of being killed or injured by hurled fire-balls, this journey makes for a long and toilsome day.  Please contact us about travel options, as there are a few ways we can approach the volcano.

We will return to our hotel for a charcuterie dinner, mezcal tasting and wine.

INTO THE WORLD OF TEXTILES

Hotel Location:  Paracho, Michoacan

Day Three

This morning we will check out of Angahuan and head for a picturesque village, known for traditional gabons (ponchos) and authentic trojes.

Our next stop will be in the enchanting village of San Felipe de los Herreros, where we will visit a family of extraordinary workmanship known as "deshilados."  Learn about this intricate and time-consuming textile, and watch the artisans working on pieces.

We will make our way to the famed rebozo town of Ahuiran, to visit some well known weavers who create pieces with feather plume fringes, which are a signature of this town due to the late Cecilia Bautista (1939-August 19, 2022).  From there, we head to Paracho to check into our hotel and explore the centro.

CERAMICS FROM THE HEART

Hotel Location:  Paracho, Michoacan

Day Four

This morning our path leads us through four major ceramic towns, each with exceptionally different styles of pottery.  We begin in Cocucho, where the famed 'Cocuchas' are hand sculpted and fired in the ground.  We then head to the towns of Ocumicho, where devils are sculptured from the earth, San Jose de Gracia where artisans create beautiful pineapple sculptures, which have a surprising history and finally, the village of Patamban where the hire-fired dishes resemble influences from Asia.

We return to Paracho for dinner, followed by local wine tasting.

INDIGENOUS DANCE & RESISTANCE

Hotel Location:  Patzuaro, Michoacan

Day Five

This morning we depart Paracho for the small village of Aranza, where we will meet an award winning weaver who creates delicate lace-like rebozos.  Our next major stop will be the controversial strong-hold of Cheran, where a group of fierce women forged a fierce movement of dissent, defying local authorities and succeeding in their descent from power over their community.  Learn about their important resistance, and how it continues to manifest within other nearby communities to this day.

One of our last stops includes a fantastic mask-carver in the village of Sevina, where you will see and learn about unusual dances from this region, which includes the chance to see and perhaps purchase antique masks that were danced in ceremonies 40-80 years ago.

We will arrive in Patzcuaro around 6 PM.
