SACRED MIGRATION TOUR

MEXICO'S SACRED MIGRATION

Americans and Canadians aren't the only snowbirds who migrate south for the winter.  The single most phenomenal migration of the world takes place between the Canadian province of Ontario, and Mexico's majestic state of Michoacan.

Visit the UNESCO Protected Monarch Butterfly Biosphere with an award winning research scientist, for an educational and rewarding experience.  Spend your nights in the Pueblo Magico's of Angangueo and Tlalpujahua, and the city of Zitacuaro.  This tour is designed for philanthropists with a passion for protecting nature, and who feel compelled to make a difference.

Due to the beach tourism that attracts visitors to this region in January/February, December is a quiet month.  Many believe December to be a poor month to visit, but the luck of the draw is actually based on the weather.  We have taken tours in December that offered fabulous numbers of Monarchs in the air, and tours in early March that were cold, and therefore the butterflies stayed in their clusters.  Please understand that we cannot guarantee what experience we will have, as it will depend on the weather

HOW DOES THIS TOUR MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

It is estimated that between 150,000 to 250,000 people visit the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere in Mexico each year.  Most of those visitors enjoy seeing the Monarchs, but learn little to nothing about their migration or environment, or how we as individuals, can make a difference to Monarch survival.  Not only do we educate our guests about the daily impact our personal choices make (eg: dietary),  this tour also raises funds for science research in the Monarch Butterfly Reserves, with a focus on soil restoration and local solutions.  Something foreigners rarely understand, even after visiting the reserves, is that indigenous Mazahua groups have been living in and logging the reserves since long before the world ever knew about the Monarch Migration.  Due to intense population growth and sustenance that relies heavily on logging, part of Dr. Jaramillo's work with soil has involved hands-on work with indigenous Mazahua communities, teaching them sustainable practices for organic avocado production, with sales that replace any revenues lost through the surrender of traditional logging practices.  The money raised from these tours assist local scientists in their endeavor to educate and inspire future generations about sustainability.

PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AN EXTENDED TOUR THAT INCLUDES TEOTIHUACAN, CHAPULTAPEC PARK AND OTHER MEXICO CITY ATTRACTIONS

GHOSTS OF XOCHIMILCO

Day One:  Wednesday December 7, 2022

Please book an early flight to Mexico City, in order to arrive by 2 PM.  From the hotel, our guide will bring you to Xochimilco, where you will board a colourful trajinera to enjoy a lovely charcuterie picnic with Mexican wines, while we meander through the floating gardens of the ancient lands where the Aztecs developed an incredible agricultural centre.  Our journey brings us to Isla de las Munecas, named by National Geographic as one of the twenty creepiest places in the world.  We will return to our hotel and enjoy an evening of free time.  Our hotel will be located in an area with nearby restaurants.

HOPE FOR THE MONARCHS

Hotel Location:  Zitacuaro

Day Two:  Thursday December 8, 2022

This morning we will have breakfast at an old haunt of the late Anthony Bourdain, before departing for the beautiful city of Toluca, to visit the ex-convent and garden.  From there, we will drive to Zitacuaro, where we will enjoy an evening lecture and dinner with PHD research scientist, Dr. Pablo Jaramillo Lopez.  Learn about the migration patterns, obstacles, solutions, and interesting project that Dr. Jaramillo has been overseeing in the region.  This lecture raises funds for his important research in the biosphere, and if guests are pleased with his work, you're welcome to make a private donation.

SACRED MIGRATION BEGINS

Hotel Location:  Zitacuaro

Day 3:  Friday December 9, 2022

Dr. Jaramillo will lead our group to visit the colony of Cerro Pelon, offering insights and information about the habitat and environment.

We will horseback ride to the colonies, as the site is very steep and difficult to manage on foot.  The horses are led by guides in the park.  This is an incredible experience that requires a full day.

Dr. Jaramillo will depart us this afternoon, and we will enjoy an evening of free time in Zitacuaro.

PILGRIMAGE OF BUTTERFLIES

Hotel Location: Angangueo

Date:  Saturday December 10, 2022

This morning we will visit the small Archaeological site of Zirahuato de los Alzati, then make our way to the beautiful Sierra Chincua Reserve.

This reserve is the flattest of them all, though there are still some hills to navigate.  For anyone who is sore from riding in Cerro Pelon, this reserve is very manageable on foot.  One last bit of fun to be had here, is a zipline for those who love adrenaline!

From Sierra Chincua, we will drive to Angangueo for the night.

Hotel Location: Angangueo

Date:  Sunday December 11, 2022

This morning we will enjoy a walking tour of the picturesque mountain village of Angangueo.  After lunch, we will head to El Rosario Sanctuary, which boasts the largest of all colonies.  Despite this being the largest, it is also the most touristy and developed, with a grand stair-case that ascends to approximately 11 thousand feel ,where this colony over-winters.

Guests may choose to horseback ride or climb, while many guests enjoy riding up and walking down - either or, this is slightly less strenuous than Cerro Pelon, with the rewards being incredible vistas to view the clusters of Monarchs.

This evening we will enjoy a mezcal tasting!

FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS

Hotel Location: Angangueo

Date:  Monday December 12, 2022

We will depart Angangueo following breakfast, and make our way to the enchanting Pueblo Magico of Tlalpujahua.  This gorgeous village is hunched up a mountainside, and was once an important mining town.  Today, Tlalpujahua is most famed as Michoacan's Christmas Town.  Artisans here make fragile and beautiful ornaments by hand, rendering an economy here that is largely based on Christmas.  If you are interested in purchasing ornaments, please be warned about their fragility, and make room in your carry-on for a few treasures.  We will offer some insight into the pieces that are easier to get home (hint: the photo above).

In the afternoon, we will visit the Dos Estrellas Mine to learn about a tragic accident here that closed the mine.

TOUR CONSIDERATIONS

Not all tours are meant for everyone!  Please take a moment to read through a few considerations, before committing to this tour!

Elevation:  If you suffer from COPD, are on oxygen, or suffer from altitude sickness, this is not the right tour for you.  We start at an altitude of 1981 Meters (6500 Feet), and climb to a height of nearly 3050 Meters (10,000 Feet).

Hiking:  As the monarchs move throughout the season, we are never sure where we will end up - but as horses are not allowed within the protected area, it's inevitable that riders will need to hike.  The hike at Sierra Chincua is much tamer than the steep incline of El Rosario; however, there are steep sections on the trails and even those on horseback will hike for around 20 mins each way.  The paths are well marked and stable.  Please remain on the path whenver possible, and try not to trample vegetation at the edges of the trail.

Horseback Riding:  Horseback riding is optional, though when it is crowded, it can be a long wait for a return-ride.  The rides cost approximately $200 MXN each way / $400 return.  Please consider tipping your guides, as their income here is very seasonal.

NIGHT TEMPERATURES IN TLALPUJAHUA AND ANGANGUEO ARE VERY COLD IN WINTER, DUE TO THE HIGH ALTITUDE.  PLEASE BRING WARM CLOTHES FOR EVENINGS, WARM PAJAMAS AND EXTRA WARM SOCKS.

TOUR ETIQUETTE

Be Flexible:  Traffic jams or delays can happen anywhere.  We will always try our best to keep our schedule and activities fluid.

Be Punctual:  We ask guests to be 5 mins early for departure times, so we can load the van and maintain our schedule as best as possible.

Taking Photos:  If you are taking up-close photos of the locals, please ask permission.  This is especially important with indigenous peoples, and children.  Most often, you will be met with a warm smile.

Sales People:  Please acknowledge sales people in the streets, even if you aren't interested in what they have on offer.  As guests, we must be mindful to show respect for the local people, including those who are homeless and asking for change.

Tipping:  It is standard for foreigners to tip between 15-20% in restaurants.  If you purchase anything in the grocery stores, and someone bags your items, the standard tip is a few Pesos per bag.  (They pay for their own bags, and do not make a wage.  They are often seniors who have no pensions).   A standard tip for hotel rooms is $40 Pesos per night.  We recommend tipping each morning, as someone different may be cleaning your room each day.

If you are happy with your tour, please consider tipping your guides.
