PUEBLA HOSPITAL, MEZCAL & MIRACLES
This day tour begins with a history lesson about the original Pueblo Hospital of the Lake Patzcuaro Region, which was the second in all of Mexico. Visit the church and browse through fantastic shops that sell incredible textiles and clothing. From Santa Fe de la Laguna, we begin our journey around the less-frequented side of Lake Patzcuaro, stopping in Oponguio to taste mezcal, Erongaricuaro to visit a silversmith and furniture gallery, and Santa Ana Chapitiro to visit a family who makes wooden carved hearts, crosses and saints that are ornamented with metal charms called "milagros," which means "miracles." We will also visit the quirky and controversial Temple of Santa Muerte to learn about an important icon of Mexico, and why this religious sect has been ex-communicated by the Roman Catholic Church.
