LA RUTA DON VASCO

As many of our friends live in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa/Troncones over the winter, we thought we would create a few tours that may interest those of you who have spent time in the Lake Patzcuaro area by offering some more unusual destinations.

This tour includes horseback riding to the ruins of the San Juan Parangaricutiro Church that was devoured by Paricutin Volcano, a visit to the small but precious ancient Nahua city of Tingambato, a stroll through Uruapan's National Forest, and some day trips to explore Paracho, Ahuiran, Cheran, and Michoacan's Mezcal route.  We have included Isla de Janitzio, Santa Clara del Cobre, Tzintzuntzan and Capula for those who haven't visited these villages, or wish to return, but as these tours are designed for custom groups, we can alter your tour to include places you haven't been.  Simply contact us and tell us your interests.  We could include an art workshop or a cooking class in Patzcuaro

URUAPAN

ARRIVAL IN THE P'UREPECHA PLATEAU

DAY 1: Your Dates

Depart Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa on an early bus, arriving in Uruapan just after noon.  Your guide will pick you up at the bus terminal, and take you directly to the small town ot Tingambato where you will enjoy a local favourite.  Carnitas Ambakity serves traditional pork braised in pork fat to perfection, served with fresh tortillas.  From here, head to the small but precious ancient city of Tingambato.

We will return to Uruapan to check-into your hotel and have dinner at Cocina M.

HOTEL LOCATION:  Uruapan

Bus to Uruapan not included - Entrance fees to Tingambato included

Meals are not included

RUINS OF SAN JUAN DE PARANGARICUTIRO

& CUPATITZIO NATIONAL PARK

DAY 2:

Arising early means beating the brutal heat of the Highland sun for an ambitious hike to the top of Paricutin Volcano.  For those who are less ambitious, it is possible to embark on a shorter, leisurely walk to the ruins of the Church of San Juan de Parangaricutiro, which was swallowed by lava when Paricutin erupted.  Following this experience, you will be transported to Cupatitzio National Park in downtown Uruapan, to enjoy the cool, cobblestone pathways of a lush forest surrounded by the sounds of spring water moving through countless water installations and fountains.

HOTEL LOCATION:  Uruapan

Entrance fees included - Horseback riding optional

Meals are not included

PATZCUARO

JOURNEY TO PARACHO, ARAHUIN

& THE RESISTANCE VILLAGE OF CHERAN

DAY 3:

Today's explorations will find you in the outskirts of Uruapan, visiting the famous instrument town of Paracho, a rebozo maker in Arahuin and learning about the female resistance that overthrew the Municipal government in the small village of Cheran.  Check into your hotel in the Pueblo Magico of Patzcuaro on time for some further exploring before dinner.

ACUITZIO DEL CANJE

& LA RUTA DEL MEZCAL

DAY 6:

The pre-hispanic feather art of Acuitzio del Canje is exquisite and requires patience and meticulous skill.  We will stop in the small village of Acuitzio del Canje if you are interested in this art form.  As the artists do not have a studio, we ask that only serious collectors request this part of our tour, as they must wrap and transport their pieces to a local shop in order to show them off!  If you are a collector, these are truly special works of art that each take about 2 months to complete.  Garcia Alexandrina learned this medium from maestra Lorena Villalobos.  Their images depict village life in and around the Lake Patzcuaro region.  From Acuitzio del Canje, we will venture onward to La Ruta del Mezcal to sample different mezcals from the Etucuaro region, where distillery owners have been growing agave for over 60 years.  Upon arriving in Morelia, we will check in and head to Cielo Cocina Fusion for a special meal to pair with mezcals.
