4TH ANNUAL CATRINA PARTY

Sunday October 30, 2022

Our annual Catrina party is back this October, and we are moving mountains to make this a truly spectacular event!  Held in a fabulous and secret location, we have private vans ready to pick you up in Morelia or Patzcuaro, with return transportation at the end of the evening.

Samantha of Santo Huacal is creating a mouth-watering 5-course tasting menu, and that's just the start!  We will have face painters at the location, for those of you who don't want to paint your own faces, and we are excited that Morelia's popular Chris Sanchez Band will be returning this year to entertain our guests with some good ole Chicago-style blues.

We are joined this year by special vendors Fundamento Vinicola, El Generalissimo Mezcal and Cerveceria Maestra Artisan Beer.  Please bring cash for the bar.

Upon arrival, guests will receive a special chocolate truffle and welcome beverage or your choice, and can enjoy the estate and gardens while mingling before our dinner begins.

We will have 3 locally made door prizes for our draw, so bring along your lucky charms.  The music ends at 11 PM, with last call at 10:30.

As it may rain, we will be under-cover, but outside.  We will have outdoor heaters, spaced apart, and recommend that guests dress warmly and bring a jacket for the ride home.

We are looking forward to hosting you, and introducing our guests to an enchanting and hidden gem in the Lake Patzcuaro region!

WHY CATRINA?

In 2017, owner Jennifer Bjarnason found herself in charge of Dia de Muertos for guests of Casona Rosa B&B in Morelia.  Guests kept asking if they should dress up for the cemetery tours, which was really unusual prior to the release of Pixar's Coco.

The knowledge that so many guests wanted to dress up was inspiring, even if the cemeteries were the wrong place for it - and so concept of La Fiesta de Catrina was born.  Jennifer began planning the 1st Catrina party for the 2018 guests of the hotel, to allow them the chance to party with Catrina, without wearing her to the cemetery.  It was a very small and exclusive party, but was a ton of fun - so the following year, our 2nd Catrina Party was moved to Cielo Cocina Fusion, where we held this party in 2019 and 2021.  This allowed us the opportunity to open it to the public, and pre-Covid, our party attracted 30 fun-loving guests.

This year we are excited to move this party to a secret location, as it is a hidden gem in the Lake Patzcuaro region that is unknown by most, with a lovely outdoor setting that will allow us a little more comfort, following covid, than being indoors with a crowd.  We look forward to seeing some familiar faces this year - and are ready to greet new and unsuspecting party-goers!

Today, many visitors dress in Catrina costumes for the cemetery tours, but we continue to ask our guests to remove their costumes on Noche de Muertos, as it is not customary among the indigenous peoples who observe and revere this holiday.  That said, it is not viewed as cultural appropriation to dress up for a party, because Catrina was never about spiritual ceremonies or customs, but was in fact rooted in satire that had nothing to do with Dia de Muertos itself.
