INTRODUCTION

Designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in November 2003, Dia de Muertos is a special and significant time to visit the Lake Patzcuaro region of Michoacan. Join us for one of our enchanting explorations of this sacred observation, and enjoy an experience that is culturally enriching, life changing and presented with ethical protocols in place. We do not announce our route for Noche de Muertos, as we will transport you to portholes far from the buses and crowds, and into an authentic and intimate experience that is only made possible through local invitations. You will embark on a mystical journey that includes a private boat ride on the legendary Lake Patzcuaro, and return weary-eyed and tired, but with a spirit that is full of wealth.

Please contact us if you would like to book a private tour for your group, or continue reading to learn about this culturally curated experience.

DAY ONE:  BIENVENIDOS

DAY TWO:  GATEWAY TO THE MESETA

Hotel Location:  Paracho, Michoacan

Date:  Tuesday October 25, 2022

Check-out and depart by 8:30 AM, visiting several small villages along our way to the guitar capital and Pueblo Magico, Paracho. Some of the art we will see today includes irreverent devils fashioned from clay, among other whimsical subjects, pine cone vessels, more commonly mistaken as pineapples, high quality dishes, and gorgeous rebozos.

DAY THREE:  LOST CITY OF SAN JUAN PARANGARICUTIRO

Hotel Location:  Paracho, Michoacan

Date:  Wednesday October 26, 2022

Depart Paracho by 9 AM for the ruins of the church at San Juan Parangaricutiro. Devoured by Paricutin Volcano in the 1940's, this is an exceptional site to see. We will have lunch, and continue exploring small villages of the P’urepecha Meseta.

DAY FOUR:  ZAPATA AND THE RISE OF INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE

Hotel Location:  Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Date:  Thursday October 27, 2022

This morning we depart Paracho for Patzcuaro, stopping in several interesting villages and towns along the way, including one that is famous for an indigenous uprising that was led by powerful P’urepecha women. Learn about Emilio Zapata and the birth of the Zapatista movement, which has mobilized indigenous groups in Mexico and around the world. We will also visit some textile artists and a master mask carver.  Upon arriving in Patzcuaro, we will check into our hotel and head out for dinner.

DAY FIVE:  TRADITIONAL DISHES OF DIA DE MUERTOS

Hotel Location:  Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Date:  Friday October 28, 2022

This morning we meet for breakfast, before joining another group in San Juan Paranchecuaro, for a cooking class with award winning P’urepecha Chef Rosalba Morales Bartolo. Learn to cook a number of traditional dishes before we feast, and depart for Hacienda Oponguio to sample mezcal. We will return to Patzcuaro on time for dinner.

DAY SIX:  LA FIESTA DE LAS CATRINAS

Today is a really fun day to be creative, and dress-up.  Our afternoon starts with a series of art workshops that you may sign up for ahead of time.  Classes available include painting a Catrina on canvas with local artist & teacher Breiseda Zepeda, finishing a wooden milagro with artists from Patzcuaro, painting a clay Catrina doll with Miguel Angel Torres and Adriana Cortes Espinosa of Capula, making hairpieces with Martha Zertuche of Patzcuaro, and some other workshops TBA.  We will have face painters on the grounds to help you with your costume, which is mandatory for our long table supper!

Our long table supper will include a fabulous 5 course tasting menu, live entertainment and door prizes.  Drinks are not included, and your art workshops are extra, based on the classes you would like to attend.  All classes range between $400-$600 Pesos, depending on the medium.

DAY SEVEN:  SYMBOLISM & HISTORY OF DIA DE MUERTOS

Hotel Location:  Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Date:  Sunday October 30, 2022

This morning we will visit the small village of Capula, to see the studio and estate of local Maestro, Juan Torres, and also have some time to wander through the Annual Catrina Festival, which is a large art market. We will return to Patzcuaro on time for lunch, though some guests may choose to eat in Capula at the market if time allows.

This evening, we will meet at Bistro Monarca Restaurant for dinner and evening lecture with cultural expert & local guide, Jaime Hernandez Balderas, who will be explaining the symbolism and history behind Dia de Muertos.

Please bring a 4x6 (or smaller) photo of a loved one who has passed, and whom you would like to honor. Jaime will explain the Altar, and guests will leave the photos on the Altar throughout Muertos. Guests can retrieve the photos on November 2, at our Farewell Brunch.

DAY EIGHT:  ISLA DE JANITZIO & VIGIL DEL ANGELITOS

Hotel Location:  Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Date: Monday October 31, 2022

This morning we will depart Patzcuaro for the famous Island of Janitzio. Due to intense crowds on Noche de Muertos, we avoid this enchanting island; however, arriving here today, we will see many preparations taking place around the town. We are leaving our afternoon free, so guests can return to the mainland early, or stay on Janitzio to visit the cemetery, statue of Morelos, and shop to their hearts delight.

This evening we will meet at Santo Huacal by 5:00 PM for dinner. We will enjoy a leisurely feast, followed by a magical evening in a nearby village, where we will learn about and participate in the Vigil for the souls of the innocents. We will return to Patzcuaro around midnight.

DAY NINE:  A SACRED PILGRIMAGE ON NOCHE DE MUERTOS

Hotel Location:  Patzcuaro, Michoacan

Date: Tuesday November 1, 2022

We will depart Patzcuaro at 11 AM for the nearby Pueblo Magico of Tzintzuntzan. Here we will explore the intriguing history of the ancient ex-convent before witnessing a grand and majestic procession of families bringing altars to the cemetery. We will depart Tzintzuntzan by 3 PM, returning to Patzcuaro to rest.

At 8 PM, we depart for a special dinner in a small village, before beginning our enchanting exploration of Dia de Muertos in the Lake Patzcuaro area. Guests should be prepared to be out until approximately 4 AM, as the Vigils begin at Midnight.

We do not advertise our route for this evening, and ask our guests to remain flexible due to high traffic.

COVID PROTOCOLS

We require proof of vaccination for Covid-19

While this may be controversial for some, the majority are cooperating with vaccines to help keep our communities safe.  Indigenous communities are at a greater risk for Covid, and our philosophy is that your right to body autonomy ends where germ warfare begins.  If you are not vaccinated, please choose a different company that doesn't require proof of your Covid-19 Vaccine.

Face mask requirements are under review, in accordance with state laws here.  We recommend guests to wear face masks if you have concerns.  Please be advised - if another outbreak occurs, and state law mandates face masks, we will require all guests to be in accordance with the rules.
