PATCUARO DAY TOURS IN THE MAJESTIC MICHOACAN HIGHLANDS

Our explorations of the P'urepecha Plateau are flexible, as some guests prefer to explore nature, while others are focused on visiting artisan studios.  For those who would like a mix of activities, we have you covered.  Please browse through our day experiences listed below, as each tour lists a number of options that are available in the area of travel.

LA RUTA DON VASCO TOURS

La Ruta Don Vasco traverses a region of Michoacan’s highlands famed for indigenous Purepecha towns and villages that were deeply influenced by the first Bishop of Michoacan, Don Vasco de Quiroga of Spain.

As a lawyer and judge who had studied canon law and theology, Quiroga had become deeply inspired by Thomas More’s Utopia, first published in 1516.  Upon arriving in Michoacan, Quiroga founded Santa Fe de Laguna as a Pueblo Hospital town, and then set about congregating indigenous populations in various towns using this concept.

Join us for a fascinating exploration of Quiroga's concepts and the modern critique of his principles employed here.  We highly recommend booking this tour on Fridays, so you can witness Pueblo Hospital in Santa Fe de Laguna.

MEZCAL TOURS

Spend the day exploring the rural back-roads of the sub-tropical plateau of Michoacan's spectacular Agave Plantations and Mezcal Distilleries.  With 60 years of history, few foreigners visit this gem region.

We cannot guarantee you will see the process, but you will certainly have the chance to sample many delicious mezcals!  We will tour a small agave plantation to learn about the different stages of life, as well as the diseases that endanger this golden crop.

If you are interested in unusual art, based on pre-columbian traditions, we will pass through Acuitzeo del Canje, where artisans create incredible pictures of the Michoacan Highlands using feathers.  We only reserve this option for serious collectors, though you are not obligated to purchase.
