A LAND OF MANY CANYONS

NOVEMBER 12-24, 2023

Snaking through the powerful mystique of six colossal, interconnected canyons is a phenomenal feat of engineering, fondly called  El Chepe train route. This 653 KM (405 Miles) scenic stretch takes 16 hours to travel in entirety, but the real adventure begins once one steps off the train platform and into the mysterious lands of the indigenous Raramuri peoples.

Construction of the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway line began in 1898, but was abandoned due to landscape challenges vs the technological advances of that era. In 1953, construction was renewed and by 1961, the railroad was complete. Scaling the Sierra Tarahumara to an altitude of nearly 8000 feet at Posada Barrancas, and through a diversity of ecosystems, this railroad crosses over 36 bridges and through 87 tunnels.

One of the reasons you will love this tour, is because our itinerary has been carefully curated to ensure you have ample time to engage with the people, culture and landscape in an intimate way.  While some tours rush through the area in a few days, this experience will leave you feeling like you know this area well.  We also entertain our guests with a variety of activities, including hiking, wine tasting and cultural activities.  We will take you from the heights to the depths of the canyons, along a road less travelled through the base of the canyons and back to the high-points before riding El Chepe back to Los Mochis for our return flight.  This tour is a great introduction to the best on offer in this region!

"The restlessness and the longing, like the longing that is in the whistle of a far away train.  Except that the longing isn't really in the whistle - it is in you."

CONSIDERATIONS DURING THIS TOUR

Bank Machines:  There are bank machines in Los Mochis, El Fuerte and Creel.  Batopilas may now have an ATM that accepts foreign cards, but it's possible that they still only have one ATM in the municiple office, and it does not accept foreign cards.  It's best to carry cash for that part of our tour - and we will remind you before we depart Creel.

Temperatures:  Los Mochis, El Fuerte and Batopilas are warmer than Posada Barrancas, Creel and Cerocahui, due to altitude.  Please dress in layers and be prepared for cold nights and mornings on the rim.

Rainfall:  Though we are travelling outside of the rainy season, we may still run into inclement weather, which can include torrential rains.  An umbrella and compact rain poncho are handy to have.

Foot-Ware:  Sturdy boots with ankle support are a wonderful thing to have for hiking and/or cold evenings.  We recommend having a change of shoes, not only because a change is comforting for the feet, but also in case your foot-ware gets wet.  All foot-ware should be suitable for hiking, as we will spend time in nature.  High heels are not recommended.

Photography:  The Raramuri people are generally very shy, but if you ask permission to take a photograph, they are usually happy to have their photographs taken.

Safety:  The Copper Canyon region is considered safe for tourism.  It isn't uncommon to see armed men in the canyons, guarding their crops and fields.  They are not interested in tourists, but it's important that you don't ever take photographs of armed civilians.
