TRADITIONAL TERRITORY
OF THE P'UREPECHA MESETA

From Ajijic & Lake Chapala
Available Year Round

TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE

P'UREPECHA MESETA

In the rural heart of the most traditional of all P'urepecha territories, lies an expanse of rustic and agricultural splendour, with old winding roads connecting a plethora of art villages, each with their own unique medium.  Less frequented by foreign or local tourists, this area is more often a treasure-hunt for gallery owners and serious art collectors who swoon at the traditional textiles, whimsical sculptures, road-side food stands, pine forests, beguiling fields, painted church ceilings, indigenous resistance and a feeling that one has stepped into the past, passing through villages where it's common to see locals in authentic attire.

If you are longing for an inspiring journey that is crusted in volcanic soil and served with a side of tradition, you've come to the right place.

INTO THE MESETA

Hotel Location:  Paracho, Michoacan

Best Day to Start:  Monday

We start our tour in Ajijic, but can pick up guests in Chapala if need be.  Then we hit the road for the resistance town of Cheran, which will take approximately 3.5 hours.  Pack some snacks and a water bottle for the ride!  We will have lunch and learn about the resistance movement in Cheran, that resulted in their self-governance.  We will then visit an incredible mask carver in the village of Sevina, before heading to Aranza to visit a weaver who creates exquisite lace-like work.  We will arrive in Paracho on time for dinner.

BORN BEFORE THE EYES OF MAN

Hotel Location:  Angahuan, Michoacan

Day Two

This morning we travel to Angahuan to visit the church ruins of San Juan Parangaricutiro.  Following our trek, we will visit a local family for a traditional P'urepecha lunch, and to browse through their incredible textiles.

From Angahuan, we will visit the charming village of Charapan, and will introduce you to an award winning weaver who makes wool gabons from scratch.  From sheering, washing, carding, spinning and weaving, this process requires skill and immense patience.

Our next stop is in San Felipe, where we will meet an esteemed family of deshilado textiles.  Learn about this intricate and difficult textile, and purchase a blouse!

We will return to our hotel for a charcuterie dinner, mezcal tasting and wine.

CERAMICS FROM THE HEART

Hotel Location: N/A

Day Three

This morning we will check out of Paracho and make our way into a ceramic-lovers paradise.  Visit Cocucho to learn how the "cocuchas" are sculpted by hand.  We will then head to Patambam to visit a wonderful studio where ceramicists make beautiful, high-fired dishes that are decorated beautifully and may remind you of Asia.  We will then visit San Jose de Gracia, to have lunch with a local family and learn about their delightful pineapple vessels and other sculptures.  Our last stop will be in the infamous village of Ocumicho, where potters sculpt whimsical devils, nativities, "the last supper," and other comical scenes that are vibrantly painted.

From Ocumicho, we will arrange to have you picked up by a private driver, and transported back to Chapala and Ajijic.  If you would prefer to visit Patzcuaro, you may ride back with us!
